This listing is for one, 20 yard skein of Olympus brand sashiko thread that was hand-dyed with either Birch Bark, Black Walnut. kakishibue or Botanical Indigo. Please choose the number and color of the skeins you wish to purchase using the pull-down menu.
This thread is 100% cotton and made in Japan especially for sashiko but can also be used for sewing, mending, knitting, crocheting, knotting, decorating and boro. This is the same thread that is found in the Olympus brand 20m and 100m skeins.
I hand dyed these skeins using locally sourced Birch bark and black walnuts, kakishibu and botanical indigo. The Birch bark gave the thread a lovely, soft beige-pink hue while the black walnuts gave the thread a gorgeous warm brown hue. **Please note that this batch of black walnut dyed thread is a deeper hue than is shown in the photos **
The kakishibu (persimmon tannin) imparts the thread with a lovely reddish - brown hue. I also treated some of the kakishibu dyed thread with an iron modifier to give it a deep black - brown hue.
The kakishibu dyed thread is a bit stiffer than the undyed thread. It should become softer with use.
The kaki-Shibu dye also acts as an insect deterrent and prevents mold. Fishing nets and stencil paper are also often dyed with kakishibu due to these reasons.
The color of kakishibu dyed items will gradually change due to exposure to ultra-violet rays, oxidation, temperature and humidity, therefore the color will vary throughout the yarn itself and over time it will change. Please note that the color of the yarn you receive may vary slightly when compared to the photos.
Botanical indigo is known for "crocking" or transferring color to lighter colored items. To prevent this from happening all thread was washed in Synthrapol detergent, in hot water, and then rinsed in vinegar-water mixture until no color bled out of the thread. Please be aware that these treatments only reduce the amount of color transfer and if the yarn is washed with lighter colored items (or rubbed against lighter colored items) it may transfer some blue color.
Please note that all these threads are hand - dyed using natural, botanical based dyes. There will be variability in the color throughout each skein as well as from skein to skein. Lighter hues will have the most variability
The last photo shows a comparison of sashiko threads. The thickest threads are to the left.
