This listing is for the happi coat seen in the photographs. Please note that happi do not have loops for belts.
Happi are straight sleeved jackets that are made of cotton fabric. They have a "mon" or crest printed on them and are worn to festivals or special occasions. This jacket is in usable condition and could be worn by a child for a robe, cover-up, smock or jacket. The jacket can also be used for decoration or disassembled to use in a boro or quilt project.
This happi is in very good condition but there are a few flaws. Please read the description carefully to learn about these flaws.
This coat is created out of a medium weight cotton fabric and is not lined. It features the traditonal ichimatsu pattern (checkerboard pattern) in blue and white. White, circular crests are dyed on the upper portion of the coat and the back features a large, red kanji. The fabric is soft and has a slightly stiff drape.
Due to the age of this item the fabric has some fading. The colors are still vibrant but the cotton has a little bit of the "fuzziness" that is often seen when it is washed or worn often.
The bottom hem of this happi also has some light yellow staining. The first area can be seen in the top picture of photo 9. The arrows are pointing to the most severe portions of the staining. This is a picture of the front, left bottom hem. The bottom picture in photo 9 shows the left, back bottom hem of the happi.
There is also a few small flaws where is appears that the cotton did not take up the blue dye. An example of this can be seen in the 8th photo where a white spot can be seen in the blue area to the right of the crest.
The last photo shows the color of the kimono most accurately. Crayola brand crayons were placed in the photos for color comparison.

-Have the child stand with his/her arms spread out and measure from one wrist, across the shoulders and to the other wrist. This will help determine where the sleeve will fall on his/her wrist.

*width of kimono: 16 1/8 inches (41 cm)
I believe that the pictures show a good representation of the fabric colors however, please remember that colors may look different on your monitor. This is a vintage item so there may be small blemishes or marks others than those noted in the description. This item has been stored for many years so there may be a slight storage smell although I do not notice one. Items can be hung in the shade to remove odor.
