This listing is for 1 yard and 3 inches (39 inches or 99 cm) of fabric. The fabric is a continuous piece with no cuts.
This tsumugi pongee fabric was sewn into a kimono and then taken apart for the kimono to be washed (araihari). This is the traditional way of washing a kimono. Therefore, this fabric has been used but it is still in excellent condition. I do not see any stains or holes.
Tsumugi silk fabrics are perfect for creating scarves, quilts or pillow cases. This fabric can also be used for apparel but please remember that kimono fabric is not as wide as other fabrics.
This tsumugi silk features a woven brown and green wavy striped pattern over a tan background. The last photo shows the colors most accurately. Crayola brand crayons were place in the photo for color comparison.
Typical of tsumugi, this fabric is highly textured and has slubbing. The fabric has a wonderful "bumpy" texture. Tsumugi is created out of pre-dyed threads. The warp and weft threads are different colors (called shot fabric) giving the fabric a wonderful depth of color. Traditionally the weft threads of tsumugi are black. The weft threads of this fabric are brown while the warp threads are a green, brown and tan. The brown weft threads are also a heavier, with more slubbing, than the warp threads. The color has a great depth and changes in the light due to the different colored and textured warp and weft threads.
Since this tsumugi was sewn into a kimono form it is less crisp than unused tsumugi silk and has a nice drape with a "cotton-like" feel. Tsumugi resists wrinkles and has a subtle sheen.
Fabric specifics:
-14.25 inches (36.1cm) wide
- light to medium weight
-primarily silk. This bolt did not have a label therefore I can not say if the fabric is 100% silk. Burn test, Bleach test and microscope all indicated that this fabric is silk.
-little to no stretch
-crisp with a slightly stiff drape
-highly textured with subtle sheen
*I am always willing to provide more information or pictures regarding my fabrics or using/sewing these fabrics. Please do not hesitate to send me a convo if you have any questions.*
I believe that the pictures show a good representation of the fabric colors however, please remember that colors may look different on your monitor. This is a vintage item so there may be small blemishes or marks although, I do not see any. This item has been stored for many years so there may be a slight storage smell although I do not notice one.
