This listing is for the pouch pictured. This is the actual pouch available for purchase.
This rustic dopp or travel pouch was created using a canvas fabric from an antique sakabukuro. The sakabukuro is about 50 years old and was used in a sake brewery in Japan.
Sakabukuro are traditionally used in the sake making process. Crude sake or "sake lees" was placed into these bags and pressed to force out the filtered sake. These cotton bags derive their gorgeous, wood-toned color from persimmon tannin (kaki-shibu)
The kaki-Shibu dye also acts as an insect deterrent and prevents mold. Fishing nets and stencil paper are also often dyed with kakishibu due to these reasons.
The color of these items will gradually change due to exposure to ultra-violet rays, oxidation, temperature and humidity, therefore no two sakabukuro have the same color and the color will vary throughout the bag itself.
The antique, sakabukuro canvas that was used to created this bag has a wonderful tan-brown color with darker and lighter colored variations. There is a boro-style patch on the bottom of the bag. This can be seen in the 7th photo. This patch was added to extend the use of the sakabukuro and is authentic. It was added by a worker in the sake brewery. The canvas also has a pleasant sweet smell that was imparted on the fabric during use as a sakabukuro.
The dopp bag also has an upcycled, dark brown zipper. Leather tabs and a leather zipper pull were hand-sewn onto the bag using kakishibu dyed thread. The dopp pouch is fully lined with a deep, indigo blue colored quilting cotton that has a printed, white, faux boro patchwork design.
The bag does not have added interfacing as the canvas provides it some structure. It will sit upright when placed on a table but is flexible and will collapse when pressed.
The bag measures about:
8.5 inches wide x 4.25 inches deep x 4 inches tall
(21.6 cm wide x 10.8 cm deep x 10.2 cm tall)
Care:
Hand wash in cool water and line dry
